what i believe

I believe in the basic goodness and natural wisdom of all human beings. Layers of confusion and unconscious wounds can disconnect us from our true selves. We may end up feeling bad and acting in ways that hurt our relationships— with ourselves, with others, with our communities, and with this magnificent planet. We become hard and out of touch with our lives and callings. Real, deep change is possible when we face ourselves and our challenges with honesty, willingness, and compassion.

who i work with

I serve individuals in all stages of adulthood with a variety of emotional, existential, and behavioral struggles. I specialize in working with people who are dissatisfied with their lives or their behavior. You may want something different but not be so sure what that looks like. If you’re in the throes of a big transition or think you might like to be, let’s talk.

People I work with often come to therapy because they’re depressed, anxious, self-critical, experiencing problems in their relationships, or have a nagging sense that their upbringing may have taught them some unskillful and unhelpful ways of relating to themselves and others.

As your therapist, I respect that your identity has many intersecting facets— sex, race, age, gender, sexuality, generation, body size and shape, ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, and more. I understand that our culture values and discriminates against these parts of your identity in different ways, and this can have a real impact on mental health. My practice is meant to be an affirming place for all people and all of who you are is welcome.

how i work

As your therapist, I will adventure with you into the weird and wonderful world of your own inner self. I base my work in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP; the “short-term” means we work together for months to years, rather than the decades-long treatment of traditional psychoanalysis). ISTDP is used to bring your most deeply authentic self into the room and into your life. We’ll focus on emotions, somatic (body-based) experiences, and uncovering layers unconscious dynamics as they show up in the here-and-now. Expect to be cared for and to be challenged— if you’re living in a stuffy little house made of old, limiting patterns, it might be time for some demolition work. I’m not afraid to hand you the sledgehammer, and I’ll be with you as you begin to step forward into an open, affirming wilderness of possibility.

I keep my practice deliberately small so that I can be deeply intentional in my work. I am passionate about the craft of therapy and I am always learning through supervision, books, formal and informal training, podcasts, and conversations with colleagues. I often tape sessions (with permission, of course), and I watch them in order to understand how to improve. I can’t overstate how much I love this work, and how seriously I take my role.
